The Lobster Quadrille

Lewis Carroll wrote the Lobster Quadrille. I ate lobster and beans in Mexico. These two ideas are vaguely related.

In Baja California, Mexico there is a small town called Puerto Nuevo, known for its lobster and fried bean tacos. The locals insist that traveling a little north or south of Puerto Nuevo makes a huge difference and the lobster won’t be as tender nor tasty. I’ve eaten lobster many times before, fried, grilled, with butter, in a bisque, but never with beans and never in a taco. The only course of action  after hearing about the famous lobster tacos was to travel to Puerto Nuevo and try said lobster dish in the place famous for it.

We stopped at a restaurant called Villa Ortega (I should note they only accept cash!!) that has a beautiful view (ask for a table with a view).IMG_6469

IMG_6452It is a large restaurant, good for large groups and has different kinds of live music groups walking around the place. Although they have a large menu we decided to order only lobster and beans. The restaurant has 3 different lobster sizes (subject to availability): small, medium and huge.

Our waiter suggested we order the small lobster, as they were most tasty, and we did. The lobsters came grilled with beans and Mexican rice. They are meant to be eaten in tacos, as it is Mexico after all, and the dish came with huge, freshly made flour tortillas for that purpose.

The dish was delicious and I would definitely come back – in fact I did! – two days later when the rest of our group joined us. You should definitely take a trip down there and eat some lobster – “Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you […]?”
